A pair of jeans is marked $48.99. When you go to the cashier it rings up for $52.17. What percent is the sales tax?

A) 6.1%
B) 15.4%
C) 6.5%
D) 7.5%

Find the dollar amount of the sales tax and divide it by the original price of the jeans.

\small 52.17-48.99=3.18     (sales tax)

\small \frac{3.18}{48.99}\approx 0.065\approx 6.5 percent
