Pick numbers. Since you are dealing with percents, pick 100, so say the box weighs 100 pounds when full. In this case, the weight of the metal box is 10 percent, or 1/10, of 100 pounds, which is 10 pounds. That leaves 90 pounds of varnish to fill the box. The weight of the partly filled box is half of 100 pounds, or 50 pounds. Since the box itself weighs 10 pounds, 40 pounds of varnish are in the partly filled box. Since the box has the capacity to hold 90 pounds of varnish, the box is 4/9 full.
